Do What You Love and You’ll Never Work a Day in Your Life

—Confucius? V/A? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

🙌

The full, proper, quote is:

Choose a Job You Love, and You Will Never Have To Work a Day in Your Life
— (Quote Investigator)

I really, truly, believe that Work® does not _have_ to be a MUST, but rather, a SHOULD (think RFC 2119):

  • What’s something you can’t stop doing?
  • Something that would wake you up every morning without even needing an alarm?
  • Hell, if YOU had to pay for it, you would *still* do it!

🖐️

All of this presumes that you are actually born into a place of opportunity to do this; to even consider Work® from this perspective.

Of course.

And, precisely because of that, I really, truly, believe that those who can, SHOULD.

Purpose

See also the Japanese concept of Ikigai: a philosophy that suggests finding your purpose lies at the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for:

A Venn diagram illustrating the concept of Ikigai. It consists of four overlapping circles labeled "What you love," "What you are good at," "What the world needs," and "What you can be paid for." The overlapping areas are labeled "Passion," "Mission," "Profession," and "Vocation," with the center where all four circles intersect labeled "Ikigai."
The Ikigai Venn diagram shows how passion, mission, profession, and vocation intersect to reveal life’s purpose. See link below for more on this concept.

It’s a brief but powerful reminder that fulfillment comes when these elements align.
